Where the name Haarlemmer Stroom comes from? It once began in 1836 when multinational Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA) established a gas plant on the Spaarne. In 1902, this complex was taken over by Municipal Light Factories. This is also when the monumental gas and electricity plant came into being, providing Haarlemmers with heat and light. The site soon expanded to include two gas holders, a new coal distillery and turbine hall for power generation. Gas production became obsolete when natural gas was found in the 1960s. Consequently, after 1968, parts of the plant were demolished but fortunately many buildings remained intact. Many buildings were built in the neoclassical style with fantastic details that can still be seen.
Between the monumental buildings, some of which are used as catering or event venues, two modern business-cum-accommodation buildings have been built.
